GROUNDED

CONCEPT

Grounded is a unique seating experience designed for smaller remote indian villages.

It consists of a larger frontal limb, meant for the user to wrap their legs around, and consists of a lower backrest for support. The user’s body is cradled by the seat, creating a sattle-like shape.

The seat would be made by the user, to their specific requirements and be built into the ground of the village huts. The mud works especially well for this because it is a naturally cooling material and it can withstand drought and heavy rain, two common types of weather in India. The Mud material allows the user to connect with the earth while being comfortable. In Hinduism, touching the earth is important when praying since it is symbolizes the connection to the earth. This seat allows them to do so in a more comfortable way.

FINAL  MODEL

PROCESS

IDEATION - I began with the idea of creating a seat with an elevated platform, however after physical modeling, I realized this would not be possible within the size constraints. I realized that focusing on the experience of sitting was a promising route.

MAKING PROCESS

I began with an MDF and Purple foam base, which I then built layers of mud, mixed with plaster and hay. After that had completed dried, I did a final coat of just plaster and mud to create smooth finished, which I then sanded.
